 November'2004
This months "Model of the Month" is a custompainted P42DC
by Roland Ruesch, also known as engineshop
 Rolands webpage: Engineshop

The model started with an undecorated Kato P42. The entire body was
painted with a mixture of Modelflex Railbox Yellow, Black and Signal Red.
Since I never saw the original, I had to match the paint according to
pictures I found on the Internet.
The stamps are from the official US Postal Service web site and it took
me about 20 hours to get them ready to put in on a decal sheet.
The postmarks were done in MS Publisher after frustrating tries
with different kinds of paint programs.
Another few hours were spent on cutting the stamps correctly and applying
them in the right spot. A few coats of semi gloss finish give the decal
 a nice shine.

This months "Model of the Month" is a kitbashed SD40-2
by Dan Leavitt, also known as daniel_leavitt2000

This is a modern SD40-2. I started with a Kato Snoot in undec.
The nose came off a Atlas GP38. The rachet brake was filled in
and the brake wheel housing was cut out and sanded down from the
snoot. The trucks were backdated to flexcoils by cutting the fueltank
ends off and filling the center holes. I left the strut becayse it
was just too much work to cut off. I also added an anticlimber to
the front, which came from a Scale Replicas GP38 conversion. The front
 drop step was cut away.

The model was painted CR blue from Modelflex. The handrails were
painted with a special mix of chip resistant RC paints. Four sets
of Microscale decals were requires for all the logos and safty decals.
I used a special mix of Testor's Semi-gloss and Flat laquers for most
of the body. "Dirty" areas were treated with thinned Modelflex black,
chalks, or both and a final coat of very flat was used to hold it on.
All painting was done using a Badger 200 airbrush.  Dan

 August'2004
This months "Model of the Month" is a scratchbuilt station made
by Brian Fons, also known as txcavgr

The station is scratchbuilt from styrene, using holgate &
reynolds brick sheet for the granite foundation blocks,
scribed siding, and laser cut shingles for the roof - from
paper creek models, got them from Chuck. The round part of
the body is formed around an Advil medicine bottle.

The station still needs some lights, a little trim, and the
edge around the roof to be painted green. And a chimney.

It was orginally built by the Atlantic & St. Lawrence
Railway, which became the CN/Grand Trunk. Today, it is
restored and is a train museum in Gorham.

This months "Model of the Month" is a custombuilt and
custompainted Guilford GP40-2LW by Jim Kostinden

The model is of a Guilford Railways' GP40-2LW. Guilford purchased
the Boston and Maine and Maine Central railroads in the early to mid
1980s. In 2000, Guilford purchased 20 GP40-2LW locomotives from the
Canadian National railroad. I have chosen to model Guilford's MEC 504.
The model is based on an Atlas GP40-2 shell/chassis and a Kaslo
CN wide cab kit. The Kaslo kit includes a resin molded wide cab,
the snow shields behind the cab, and the anti-climber. Other detail
parts include a fire-cracker antenna, front and rear mounted ditch
lights, new rear headlamp, modified air horns, snow plows, and
MU hoses, all of which are Sunrise detail parts. MV lenses were
installed in all headlamp and ditch light housings. In addition,
Gold Metal Models' grab irons were installed on the cab and rear
 end of the body.
The body was spray painted a "Guilford" gray color using a Tamiya
military gray color, from a spray can. Microscale Guilford decals were
used for the lettering, while Microscale orange trim film was cut to
form the orange stripe. The front and rear end plates, anti-climber
front and snow plow were painted reefer orange. Trucks and fuel tank
 were painted grimy black.
The unit was then lightly weathered (drybrushed and chalks) and
sprayed with Dullcote. Finally, Microscale crystal clear was used to
create the windows in the cab and applied over the front number boards
to represent the glass over the number boards.

This months "Model of the Month" is a scratchbuilt GE 44-tonner
by Randall D. Gustafson, also known as randgust

This started as a Kato 11-105 "Critter" chassis,
with the motor turned on edge to fit in the GE hood.
The original feasibility was done by Ron Bearden,
of the Atlas Forum, who prototyped the mechanism.
Chris Schmuck, also of the Atlas Forum, has developed
some cast resin masters for his own 44-tonner project
underway, and provided me with a set of proper GE-truck
sideframes to put over the original Kato trucks.
End steps are .015 brass bent to shape.

Body shell is scratchbuilt Evergreen styrene, with
photoengraved brass grilles from the venetian blind
set from Gold Medal Models. Handrails are soldered .010 wire.
End steps are stainless steel F-unit steps also from GMM.

Paint is Floquil Santa Fe Blue, with Micro-scale decals.

This months "Model of the Month" is a variety of custompainted
and decaled boxcars from A.B., also known as Virginia Atlantic Railroad
(or "bait fish" or similar... )

Okay, my submission is a brace of VARR Boxcars.
All are MicroTrains cars repainted, decaled and VERY
lightly weathered. Not to much to explain, I used
standard model paints (Polyscale if I recall) with decals
from Great Decals (the W&OD car) and RailGraphics (the VARR).
Obviously, the W&OD logo is the one the real road used
(although they never owned this type of equipment), but
the VARR scheme and logo is of my own design. A.B.

NOTE: The car with #10160 is a real rare collectible item.
Look close to the VARR logo and you'll see the people from
the VARR paintshop had made an error - seen ?

 February'2004
This months "Model of the Month" is a UTAH Railway GP38
Build and custompainted by Brian G. Banna

There are a few compromises I made in this model.
For one I did not attempt to make the split access doors under
the cab. I also chose to stick with the stock handrails and i
could not quite figure out how to simulate the extra lift tabs
welded to the top sides of the hood roof. Other than that, the
model is pretty darn close to the prototype.
I think the most challenging part of this model was cutting the
notch in the nose. It was hard to make sure the edges were all
 parallel.

More info and pictures of this marvelous engine you'll find here.
