This months "Model of the Month" is a custompainted Kato SD70MAC
by Grant, also known as grantsar

Southern Alberta Rail is a bridge route between the CPR at Dunmore
Alberta and the UP at Kingsgate BC. A large portion of the traffic
is heavy unit trains and AC power is favored in the form of
EMD's SD70mac. SAR's DC fleet of 9-44CW's are being replaced with
these units and several 4300 hp flared 70mac's.
Rumor has it that an order for SD70ace's is being considered.
Unit 707 is from an order of 9 (705-713) SD70mac's that were the first
units delivered in the new Orange and Aluminum scheme.

Commercially Southern Alberta Rail is responsible, in association
with Kaslo Shops, for offernig several unique N scale locomotive kits.
The EMD SD40-2F and soon to be released EMD's F45 with plans for
several more cowl units in the future. For more info contact

 February'2005
This months "Model of the Month" is a kitbashed SDP40
by Chuck Chenault, also known as slsfnut

This is a Kato SD40 long hood and a Kato SD45 frame and
walkway/handrail assembly. By using the SD40 shell, I was
able to remove the rear of the long hood and build a
steam generator extension. This was built using Kato doors
from an SD45 shell, the rear is a non-dynamic brake housing
from an Atlas GP7, the upper sides were built using .020 styrene
and shortened and thinned LifeLike GP18 grills, the top is
.020 styrene with a .005 overlay with rivets punched in it.
Miscellaneous Sunrise, Gold Medal and JnJ details were used.
I used PollyScale paint, Floquil Flat Finish, and it was
 weathered using ModelFlex paint.

 Model of the Year 2004
"Model of the Year" is this UTAH Railway GP38
Build and custompainted by Brian G. Banna

There are a few compromises I made in this model.
For one I did not attempt to make the split access doors under
the cab. I also chose to stick with the stock handrails and i
could not quite figure out how to simulate the extra lift tabs
welded to the top sides of the hood roof. Other than that, the
model is pretty darn close to the prototype.
I think the most challenging part of this model was cutting the
notch in the nose. It was hard to make sure the edges were all
 parallel.

More info and pictures of this marvelous engine you'll find here.
